Home to the best of the Dutch paintings from the 17th century with masterpieces from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Rubens and others.
In a majestic 17th century building in the heart of The Hague you can find one of the most breath-taking and world-renowned collections of Dutch and Flemish masters from the seventeenth century. Masterpieces such as Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt, The Goldfinch by Fabritius and The Bull by Potter, and paintings of Rubens, Brueghel, Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Van Ruisdael, and more are on permanent display in the intimate rooms.
The beautiful Prince William V Gallery is located at the Buitenhof, a five-minute walk from the Mauritshuis. Prince William V of Oranje-Nassau had the room built in 1774 in order to exhibit his paintings. The walls were fully covered with famous masterpieces. His collection formed the basis for the collection of the Mauritshuis. In the last few years, the Prince William V Gallery has been restored to its former luster. More than 150 old masterpieces from the Mauritshuis collection (including works by Steen, Rubens, and Potter) are once again on display side by side. Crystal chandeliers, silken wall coverings, and lavish curtains complete the regal appearance. A ticket to the Mauritshuis includes entry to the Prince William V Gallery.
2019 marks the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death. To celebrate his life the Mauritshuis presents two special exhibitions:
Rembrandt and the Mauritshuis (31 Jan – 15 Sep 2019). - The Mauritshuis has one of the most renowned and important collections of paintings by Rembrandt in the world. The museum will exhibit all of the eighteen paintings in the collection that are or have been attributed to Rembrandt.
Nicolaes Maes (17 Oct 2019 - 19 Jan 2020). He is one of Rembrandt’s most talented pupils. This is the first retrospective exhibition of this painter from Dordrecht.
Shifting Image - In search of Johan Maurits (4 April - 7 July 2019). - In Brazil, he is so well known that everyone knows who you mean with the name ‘Nassau’. In the Netherlands, he was considered a hero in the seventeenth century, while today his name can be associated with colonialism and slavery. His name is Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen (1604-1679), governor of the Dutch colony in Brazil and the man who built the Mauritshuis. This exhibition takes a close look at Johan Maurits’ reputation and examines how his story can be viewed from different perspectives, both present-day and historical.
