Museum Gouda presents the story of the historical city of Gouda. You will see unique, 16th-century altarpieces, torture devices from the Middle Ages, 17th-century civil-guard group portraits and Gouda Pottery, that is famous all over the world. In addition to the history of Gouda, Museum Gouda has an extensive collection of French and 19th-century Dutch painting – beautiful paintings by artists including Daubigny, Fantin-Latour, Israels and Weissenbruch. In addition to the permanent collection, there are also temporary exhibitions, such as Painting outdoors and Low Countries.
From the 1840s, artists head out into nature to paint the landscape. Until that time, such paintings were made in the studio. The little hamlet of Barbizon, south of Paris, and the village of Oosterbeek, located on the edge of the Dutch Veluwe, develop into popular artist colonies in the middle of the nineteenth century. The exhibition Painting outdoors beautifully shows how various French and Dutch artists give their own interpretation of painting ‘en plein air’.
Low Countries is a beautiful journey through four centuries of Dutch landscape painting. Forty treasures from the Rijksmuseum collection combined with a selection from Museum Gouda's own collection show how the landscape shaped the Dutch identity.
