Discover Rembrandt (From July 6th - September 1st, 2019)

Experience all 350 of Rembrandt’s paintings together in their original size and in the order of their production! Discover Rembrandt – His Life and All his Paintings is a retrospective of Rembrandt’s complete oeuvre of paintings. The exhibition presents an ode to the greatest Dutch master ever, in the city where he lived most of his life. Never before has his oeuvre, which has spread throughout the world, been brought together so beautifully and completely. The works from museum collections, but also those from private collections, including the stolen and damaged paintings.

Approximately 350 paintings are now attributed to Rembrandt. Only 41 of them are in Dutch collections, the remainder has been spread over more than 18 countries. All paintings can be seen in Discover Rembrandt, superbly reproduced in their true size, including the more than 50 paintings which are currently not accessible to the public.

Anyone who has seen the exhibition will view the originals with much more understanding. Discover Rembrandt is, therefore, a must for those who love to admire the original works at the Rijksmuseum (18 Rembrandts), The Mauritshuis (12 Rembrandts) or at one of the other collections.

Digitally Restored

With the help of the latest techniques and the inexhaustible knowledge of Professor Ernst van de Wetering, the most important Rembrandt scholar in the world, all paintings by Rembrandt have been digitally brought back to their original state, as they once left the painter’s studio. Every period in Rembrandt’s life and work is described and brought to life by means of the paintings and texts.

Discover Rembrandt – His Life and All His Paintings gives a deeper insight into the art and life of one of the world’s greatest artists and gives visitors the chance to get to know the many insights that 50 years of Rembrandt research have produced. The highlight of the exhibition is the Night Watch, which has been reproduced in its original state, including the part that was cut off in 1715 to fit the new location in the city hall, now the Royal Palace on Dam Square.

Discover Rembrandt takes place during Rembrandt and the Golden Age, the national celebration of the life of Rembrandt and the Golden Age, on the occasion of Rembrandt’s 350th year of death. All year long, fantastic exhibitions and events take place, including at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis in The Hague and Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden. Discover Rembrandt is excellent preparation for your visit to the original paintings!
